Introduction

What future do we collectively aspire to create for health, the health workforce and health systems in Canada?

That is the question driving Impact 2040, the CMA’s strategy planning process, and the question we’d like to explore with you.

Guided by our vision of a Vibrant Profession and a Healthy Population, we’ve set our sights on 2040 to imagine a bold new future. We want to swing for the fences and challenge ourselves – and others – to have the courage and creativity to be the change we want to see.

Imagining Potential Futures

Potential Futures are short narratives describing what a desirable world might look like in the future; the “big bets” we collectively aspire to realize by 2040.

We set out to describe Potential Futures through an iterative process of research; broad-based member, stakeholder and patient engagement; and deep reflection on how the COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally disrupted the status quo.

Four Potential Futures synthesize what we’ve learned to date, but we are intentionally leaving them open-ended for now to inspire bold and creative dialogue:

1.    Canada sets the global standard with the healthiest and most fulfilled health workforce in the world

2.    Canada formally pronounces patient-driven care the “standard of care”

3.    Canada leads the way in equitable access to high quality health care for all patient populations

4.    Canada leads globally in the creation of a “healthy” health and social system, rather than a “sick care” system

Your input will help refine, or challenge, these Potential Futures to make them better and bolder. This is an important step in our journey towards Impact 2040 – and it’s a journey we’d like to take with you. Thank you for taking the time to share you experience and expertise with us.
